La Torre del Sumidero
Underneath the sandy seabed, a vibrant ecosystem thrives, home to an array of fascinating marine species. Divers can observe the exotic greate weever fish, cotton-spinner, and starfish, gracefully navigating the crystal-clear waters. The diverse marine population includes striped red mullets, saddled seabream, white seabreams, and two-banded seabreams.
This particular dive site presents an opportune moment for reflection on human impact on the marine world. The construction of the desalination plant resulted in an unfortunate incident where mismanagement led to the accumulation of a slime-like substance on the seabed, thickening to over 5 centimeters in certain areas. This had an adverse effect on the Neptune grass and its inhabitants. However, significant efforts have been made to restore the ecosystem, with the removal of substantial quantities of the substance and the subsequent resurgence of life.
The base of the water collection tower has now transformed into an artificial reef, teeming with a plethora of marine life. Schools of damselfish barracudas, white seabreams, two-banded seabreams, Mediterranean moray eels, mottled groupers, groupers, meagres, ornate wrasses, mullets, and octopuses have sought refuge amongst the man-made rocks. This breathtaking spectacle beckons divers to witness nature's ability to adapt and reclaim its territory.
With a maximum depth of 19 meters and a visibility of 21 meters, this dive site is suitable for both beginner and advanced divers. It is a captivating underwater journey that showcases the fascinating world beneath the waves. Situated at 32, Avinguda de la Cala Blanca, Son Carrió, Cala Blanca, Ciutadella, Menorca, Balearic Islands, 07769, Spain, this remarkable dive site in Spain invites all nature enthusiasts to explore and appreciate the delicate balance between humans and the marine environment.
