Viking Cave, Krabi in Thailand

Viking Cave is a captivating dive site located in the northeastern side of Koh Phi Phi Leh island, Thailand. It offers a stunning bay and an exquisite cave above the water, but the real adventure awaits a few hundred meters north, underwater. Thanks to the efforts of the Phuket Marine Conservation department, an artificial reef was created here after the tsunami, fostering the thriving marine life in the area.

Divers exploring Viking Cave will encounter an array of fascinating marine species such as the long-finned Batfish, Lionfish, and Leopard Sharks. Additionally, the shallow waters of the bay often provide glimpses of baby Blacktip reef sharks, truly enhancing the diving experience.

Apart from its underwater wonders, Viking Cave is renowned for its historical and cultural significance. The cave's name originated from the captivating paintings found on its walls, depicting various types of boats, including a resemblance to a Scandinavian drakkar. These paintings, though relatively recent, are believed to have been created by sailors seeking refuge in the cave during storms.

A visit to Viking Cave unveils the local industry of hunting and harvesting swiftlet birds' nests. Highly valued in Chinese culture for their purported health benefits, these edible nests are considered to be particularly beneficial for the skin. Legend has it that sailors stranded on one of the limestone islands near the cave survived by consuming these nests while awaiting rescue. The risky task of collecting bird's nests involves navigating bamboo scaffolds in darkness. These prized nests fetch an average price of US$2,500 per kilo in the market.

With a visibility of 12 meters and a maximum depth of 16 meters, Viking Cave caters to divers of all levels, from beginners to advanced. Its close proximity to Palong wall in the Krabi Province adds to its charm, making it a sought-after destination for diving enthusiasts.

Discover the enchanting beauty of Viking Cave, Thailand's extraordinary dive site, where natural wonders and cultural tales seamlessly intertwine.
