RTN Kled Gaeow (Wreck)
The Kled Gaeow Wreck, located in Krabi Province, Thailand, is an ideal dive site for experienced divers. This 47-meter long ship was decommissioned in 2014 and intentionally sunk with a controlled explosion to create a captivating underwater attraction. Positioned 800-1000 meters east of Piley Bay (Ko Phi Phi Ley), the wreck sits almost upright with a slight 20-degree list, facing north to south.
Originally named RNoMS Norfest and launched in Norway in 1948, this vessel was later purchased and commissioned into the Royal Thai Navy in 1956. With its rich history, the Kled Gaeow Wreck offers divers the opportunity to explore its fascinating features. Despite a slight 10-degree list to port, there are numerous entry points, including cargo holds, cabin doors, passage ways, and steps, allowing for penetration. However, it is essential to undertake such dives with proper training and equipment.
The superstructure can be found aft of midships, with the top of the wheel house / funnel area at a depth of around 14 meters. Below the wheel house, two additional decks with railings and ladders provide access to small cabins, which are suitable for qualified divers seeking penetration experiences. From the superstructure, divers can continue their exploration towards the stern of the ship, which offers an aft deck with a covered cabin area and surrounding passageway.
In the center of the aft deck, a cargo hold entrance can be found, featuring a circular area that potentially housed a fire-fighting pump in the past. Moving forward from the superstructure, the main hold area reveals the mast lying horizontally along the ship's center, extending to the forward cabins and deck area. Around the forward cargo holds, there are multiple small cabins and penetration points, with two cargo hold entrances on the top of the forward deck leading to the bow.
It is important to note that visibility on the wreck may vary, but generally remains at around 16 meters. Due to its location and north-south orientation, the Kled Gaeow Wreck is sensitive to currents, making it less suitable for newly certified, inexperienced, or less confident divers. With a maximum depth of 27 meters, it is advisable to make the Kled Gaeow Wreck the first dive of the day, followed by a second, shallower dive on one of the nearby coral reefs.
For advanced divers looking for an exciting and challenging dive experience in Thailand, the Kled Gaeow Wreck in Krabi Province is a must-visit destination.
