Stampach
The dive site Stampach in Switzerland is renowned for its breathtaking beauty. Divers of an advanced level will delight in exploring the diverse and dramatic steep face it offers. However, caution must be exercised while crossing the road, as there is potential danger in this area. It is essential to note that Stampach is not suitable for beginners.
When diving at Stampach, divers can expect to encounter one or two burbots throughout the year. Additionally, during the beginning of winter, the site becomes a perfect spot for observing chars in their natural habitat.
To access the dive site, follow the road from Thun. Approximately 1 km after passing Duck/Ants Corner, there is parking available on the left side. The parking area can accommodate 3-4 cars, but please ensure the hiking trail remains unobstructed. The entrance and exit for diving are located on the opposite side of the road, about 70 meters towards Interlaken. You can easily identify the diving location by the diving flag attached to the railing above the stream. It is crucial to exercise caution while crossing the road due to the challenging bend in this area.
The dive itself begins with a comfortable entry over the ramp, directing divers to keep to the right and descend at an angle of approximately 45° towards Thun. As you reach a depth of around 20 meters, you will encounter the edge of the wall. From here, continue diving to the right, always heading towards Thun. However, be cautious of the depth, as the foot of the Nagelfluh descends beyond 80 meters.
After approximately 10 minutes into the dive, you will reach the gravel bed of the canyon. With some luck, you may witness the spectacular spawning of chars during the winter season. Following the gravel bed upstream, the canyon gradually narrows and becomes more intricate in its features. At a depth of roughly 27 meters, the canyon becomes so narrow that diving in succession with care is imperative.
Towards the end of the canyon, divers should continue with caution, ensuring that those behind can also witness the beauty of the surroundings, until reaching a depth of approximately 20 meters. At this point, divers will find themselves directly underneath the creek inlet. Depending on the weather conditions, visibility of the creek can be quite good. During the ascent, keep an eye out for the magnificent burbot, which can often be spotted deep within the crevices.
As you dive back over the sediment-covered slope, you will glide over a visually stunning formation of hills. It is a truly remarkable experience to explore this area and then comfortably ascend to conclude the dive.
Stampach dive site offers a maximum depth of 34 meters, with visibility reaching up to 7 meters. Its unique characteristics and stunning underwater landscape make it a must-visit destination for advanced divers seeking an unforgettable experience.
