Black Rocks, Carriacou
Located at the southernmost point of Carriacou in Grenada, Black Rocks is a captivating dive site that offers divers a thrilling adventure in the water. With its rugged volcanic rocks ascending from the sea bed to just above the surface, this remote and uninhabited location promises an unforgettable underwater experience.
One of the highlights of diving at Black Rocks is the presence of strong currents, which create an exhilarating environment for advanced divers. These currents attract a diverse array of marine life, including abundant triggerfish, barracuda, and even sharks. Among the species commonly spotted here are nurse sharks, blacktip sharks, and Caribbean reef sharks.
As the site is located at the southernmost tip of Carriacou, visiting Black Rocks allows divers to explore the southernmost region while still technically being within the area of Carriacou. However, the conditions at this site are not for the faint of heart. The powerful currents rushing through the rocks can unpredictably toss divers around, resembling the motion of a washing machine. Nevertheless, the captivating marine life and unique underwater topography make this challenging dive well worth the adventure.
The rocky plateau at Black Rocks reaches a maximum depth of 18 meters and is adorned with a stunning display of hard corals and dense sponges. These sponges are often bent at 90-degree angles due to the force of the current. Divers typically begin their descent on the eastern side of the rocks and swim southwards, where they will encounter schools of Durgeons and Atlantic triggerfish. In the midst of the current, stealthy barracuda patiently await their prey. Approaching the rocks, lucky divers may even spot a resting reef shark, gracefully allowing water to pass over its gills.
The western side of Black Rocks presents a contrasting experience, with calm and serene waters. Here, large hawksbill and green sea turtles are frequently observed, gracefully navigating their tranquil surroundings. Although the dive at Black Rocks is not typically a lengthy one, it caters to experienced thrill-seekers who are eager to embrace the wild ride offered by this exceptional dive site.
With a visibility of 22 meters, Black Rocks provides ample clarity for divers to fully immerse themselves in the underwater wonders it holds. Its recommended advanced diver level underscores the need for divers to possess the necessary skills and experience to handle the challenging conditions effectively. Located in Grenada, but in close proximity to Carriacou, specifically Hillsborough and Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Black Rocks is an extraordinary dive destination that offers a unique and memorable experience for adventurous divers seeking an unparalleled underwater encounter.
