Illa Negra
Just south of Cap de Begur, in the beautiful waters of Spain's Catalonia region, lies a hidden gem for divers - Illa Negra. This large island, crafted from mesmerizing dark rock, provides an excellent diving experience suitable for divers of all levels. Protected from the north winds, Illa Negra offers a tranquil environment that is always shielded from the crashing waves.
As you descend into the depths, you'll be greeted by a vibrant array of marine life. Marvel at the graceful movements of moray eels, and witness the spectacle of large schools of bream gliding through the water. Barracuda, Forkbeard, conger eels, groupers, and nudibranch are just a few of the other fascinating creatures you may encounter. If you're lucky enough to visit in the spring, keep an eye out for the elusive monkfish, or venture deeper to spot majestic rays or Marbled electric rays hiding in the sandy seabed.
The dive itself follows the wall of the island, typically starting from the south, where shoals of bream and glazed fish seek refuge. Along the way, you'll come across a small cave adorned with sponges, leading to an enticing overhang. Delicate streams of water gently flow from this overhang, guiding you towards a sandy bottom approximately 19 meters below the surface. Here, you'll discover a remarkable rock formation known as the second island, ranging in depth from 13 to 21 meters. Covered in coralline and vibrant green algae called Halimeda tuna, the second island is a thriving ecosystem. Peer into the crevices and you'll spot scorpions, small groupers, and elusive moray eels.
On your return journey to the main island, you'll navigate a vertical wall adorned with striking white gorgonian coral. This wall gradually leads to another enchanting overhang, adorned with yellow encrusting anemone and a captivating cave. As you explore the sandy bottom, keep a lookout for hidden treasures such as buried stingrays.
With a maximum depth of 21 meters and visibility reaching up to 10 meters, Illa Negra ensures a rewarding underwater adventure for both beginner and advanced divers. Located near the picturesque Camí de Ronda in Begur, Lower Empordà, Girona, Illa Negra is a must-visit dive site for those seeking a remarkable underwater experience in Spain.
