Ruy Barbosa (Wreck)

The wreckage of a cruise ship is scattered off Memory Beach, southeast of the old town in Portugal. Situated between 9 and 15 meters deep on a mixed background of rock and sand, this dive site offers an accessible and intriguing underwater experience. Whether reaching it from the beach or by boat, divers have the opportunity to observe a variety of marine life, including wrasse, pout, sea bream, sea bass, octopus, congers, and various crustaceans.

The ship in question is the Ruy Barbosa, owned by the Lloyd Brasileiro Navigation Company. Spanning an impressive 149 meters in length, it once accommodated up to 650 passengers. Originating from northern Europe, specifically Hamburg and Antwerp, the vessel's final destination was Brazil. However, dense fog altered its course, causing it to run aground as it sailed towards Leixões. On July 31, 1934, at approximately 5 pm, the incident occurred. Miraculously, all passengers and crew members were successfully rescued thanks to the calm sea conditions. Sadly, the ship eventually succumbed to the relentless power of the sea.

Today, divers have the incredible opportunity to explore the remnants of the Ruy Barbosa. Large plates scattered across the seabed, the boiler, and an anchor are among the intriguing sights awaiting underwater enthusiasts. To embark on this dive, basic wreck diving and navigation certifications are recommended. While surface currents are common, bottom currents are virtually nonexistent. However, as this dive site is located near the coast, it is important to assess ocean conditions, paying particular attention to wave activity. With average visibility at around 4 meters, wearing a 7mm isothermal suit is advised to combat the average water temperature of approximately 13ºC / 55.4ºF.

For beginners seeking an unforgettable underwater adventure, the best time to indulge in this dive experience is between June and September. With a maximum depth of 15 meters and improved visibility of 8 meters, this dive promises an immersive exploration of history beneath the vibrant waters. Explore the intriguing shipwreck of the Ruy Barbosa for an unforgettable dive in Portugal.
