Katedrala, Premuda Island

Premuda, the westernmost island in the Zadar archipelago, is a hidden gem for divers in the crystal-clear waters of Croatia. Situated southwest of Silba and northwest of Škarda, this captivating island boasts an extraordinary underwater landscape, perfect for adventurous divers seeking a unique experience.

One of the highlights of diving in Premuda is exploring the remarkable Katedrala cave system. Nestled beneath the island's waters, this complex of small caves is aptly named for its awe-inspiring large cupola-shaped hall and porous ceiling. The splendor of the cave is enhanced by the play of light filtering through various openings, creating a mesmerizing turquoise hue.

As you delve into the depths of Katedrala, you'll encounter a vibrant array of marine life. Spider crabs, octopi, and rainbow wrasse gracefully maneuver through the underwater caverns. Fascinating sponges, corals, and polychaeta add bursts of color and texture to the cave walls. Keep an eye out for mullet, white two-banded and sheepshead bream, and if you're lucky, you may even spot a school of magnificent amberjack swimming by.

To reach this captivating dive site, divers embark on a boat journey, guided by local dive centers. The site is marked by an anchoring buoy above a plateau at a depth of 6 meters. The dive commences from the buoy, descending to the plateau before venturing into one of the cave openings. The approach is slow and gradually drops to a maximum depth of 30 meters. Inside the cave, the larger hall presents a captivating opening on the right wall at a depth of 18 meters. Following the right side of the hall, divers will venture approximately 20 meters before encountering a narrow tunnel affectionately known as 'The Chimney.' This passage leads back to the plateau and is wide enough for only one diver at a time.

For more experienced and adventurous divers, an alternative tunnel awaits next to the main cave entrance. With a depth of 50 meters, this tunnel adds an extra layer of excitement to the dive. It leads to a depth of 16 meters and provides divers with an entirely different perspective of the underwater world.

To fully experience the wonder of Katedrala, local dive centers organize full-day trips with two unforgettable dives. With a recommended diver level of advanced to expert, this dive site offers an exhilarating challenge for skilled divers seeking to expand their underwater horizons. The journey from the dive center to the Cathedral dive site takes approximately 1.5 hours, allowing divers to soak in the breathtaking scenery of Zadar County along the way.
