Prepare to encounter an array of fascinating creatures during your dive. From playful juvenile groupers and graceful moray eels to colorful nudibranchs and camouflaged scorpionfish, Hondoq Reef is teeming with life. As you venture into the open areas, you'll also come across parrotfish and rays gracefully gliding along the sandy seabed.
Begin your dive from the far left side of Hondoq Bay, enjoying the convenience of a shore dive. The journey commences amidst a boulder field, where you'll encounter an abundance of lively sally lightfoot crabs. Schools of parrotfish and small scorpionfish call this area home. Continuing onwards, you'll pass over a Poseidonia meadow, where keen-eyed divers can spot moray eels, octopus, and cuttlefish. After approximately 10 minutes, you'll reach the sandy area on the southern side of the reef, where small stingrays and torpedo rays gracefully glide above the seabed. At this point, the depth ranges between 9 and 14 meters. Prepare to witness an impressive arch adorned with vibrant false corals and mesmerizing nudibranchs. The reef cracks serve as safe havens for juvenile groupers. As you progress to the north side of the reef through one of the many swim-throughs, you'll be greeted by a boulder-filled underwater landscape, accompanied by bustling schools of parrotfish.
Important to note, due to its location in the Gozo-Comino Channel, Hondoq Reef can experience varying intensity currents. Additionally, while exploring the reef, keep an eye out for the unique treasures that lie within. Fossilized shark teeth and ancient fragments of Roman pottery have been discovered in the vicinity. Remember, collecting these artifacts is strictly prohibited under Maltese law.
