Hellenistic Port

The Hellenistic Port is an ancient harbor located in front of the Issa Hotel in Croatia. This dive site offers a unique experience for divers of all levels. The entrance to the water is easily accessible via a concrete quay, with a maximum depth of 13m and a shallow area where the water depth does not exceed 1.5m.

Divers can explore the sloping area of the port, which is covered in vibrant yellow sponges. The visibility in this dive site is excellent, reaching up to 17m, providing divers with a clear view of the underwater surroundings.

Night dives at the Hellenistic Port are particularly enchanting, offering the opportunity to encounter fascinating marine creatures such as squid, lobster, conger eel, and octopus. During the day, if you're lucky, you might spot a sea hare, a remarkable and oversized slug, in the shallower parts of the dive site.

This dive site holds historical significance as it is situated in the western part of the Vis Bay, where the Greeks founded their first colony in Dalmatia during the 4th century BC. As you explore the waters, you can witness the remains of this ancient culture, which have gradually become submerged at low depths over the course of two and a half thousand years due to the gradual rise of the sea level.

The Hellenistic Port, also known as the beach dive, is an ideal location for divers who are new to the Vis island or those seeking a memorable night diving experience. The nearby Nautica Vis Diving Center provides convenient access to this captivating dive site.

As you venture into the water, you'll discover a diverse underwater topography. To the north, a shallow slope transitions into a sandy plain covered in grass at a depth of 6m. The plain gradually descends towards the middle of the Vis Bay, reaching a depth of approximately 50m below sea level. Divers will be captivated by the abundance of yellow sponges that adorn the slope, providing a habitat for various marine organisms. Benthic organisms have also made their home among the remains of amphorae, showcasing the coexistence of nature and ancient artifacts.

On the southern side of the concrete quay, the slope descends to a depth of around 10m. Large rocks dominate this area, offering hiding spots for Mediterranean groupers and red scorpionfish. Further down, the stony slope becomes a favorite spot for octopuses to dwell. These captivating creatures, along with numerous crustaceans and predatory tun shells (Tonna) - the largest predatory sea snails in this part of the Adriatic Sea - make night dives from the shore incredibly rewarding.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver, the Hellenistic Port dive site in Croatia promises an unforgettable underwater adventure. Immerse yourself in the rich history and abundant marine life of this remarkable location. The Issa Hotel, located in Rogačić, Grad Vis, Split-Dalmatia County, is in close proximity to this dive site, making it a convenient choice for accommodation during your diving expedition.
