Stuka (Wreck)
The Junkers Ju 87, also known as the Stuka, was a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft used during World War II. This well-preserved plane rests upright at a depth of 25-27m in the water.
Diving enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the wreck is under protection, and Najada Diving holds the license to explore it. Located approximately 13 nautical miles from Murter, this dive site is accessible to divers of all levels.
The aircraft met its fate on April 1, 1941, when it was shot down by the anti-aircraft defense of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia during an attack on Šibenik. Out of the 5,709 Stuka aircraft produced, only two remain in museums in Chicago and London, while the other three have found their resting place in the underwater world. This particular wreck has the best condition compared to the others.
Spearfishermen made a significant discovery in September 2014, uncovering this remarkable wreckage after 73 years. The entire aircraft is remarkably intact, aside from the engine which was left in a nearby bay. The machine gun and instrument console were carefully removed for restoration and preservation, to be exhibited at a future museum on the island of Žirje.
With a maximum depth of 30m and visibility reaching up to 18m, this dive site offers a captivating underwater experience. Suitable for both beginner and advanced divers, it is an ideal location for exploring history beneath the Croatian waters.
For those seeking an unforgettable dive adventure, Žirje in the Grad Šibenik, Šibenik-Knin County, Croatia, provides a close and convenient location. Plan your dive and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of this historic aircraft wreck.
