Grotta Byron
This dive spot is ideal for macro photography enthusiasts, with an abundance of red and blue damselfish and nudibranchs. The starfish-like creatures are a common sight here. Additionally, divers can expect to encounter the magnificent Apogon imberbis, known as the "kings of mullets," as well as sea horses and cnidarians.
Upon reaching the dive site, visitors will marvel at the towering walls that overlook the sparkling sea. One side reveals remnants of an ancient military garrison, while the other side unveils St. Peter's walls. This stunning backdrop transforms Byron's Cave into a truly spectacular bay.
To access the site, divers will anchor their boats on the right-hand side of the cove, above a rocky and sandy seabed approximately 5 meters deep. As they descend to the bottom, divers will be greeted by a wall adorned with numerous gorges, providing shelter for various fish species and invertebrates. Following this wall throughout the dive, divers will eventually reach the tip of a rocky stack where the wall transitions into sandy terrain. Among the commonly spotted marine life in this area are mullets, soles, and turbots. Keep an eye out for Ugo's burrow, a colossal conger eel fondly referred to as the "guardian" of the bay.
As divers continue along the wall, they will encounter organ pipe sponges (Axinella polypoides) and the initial branches of gorgonian coral (Leptogorgia sarmentosa). Further exploration reveals a wide indentation where massive stones serve as shelter for congers, morays, lobsters, and slipper lobsters (Scyllarus arctus). This site also offers an exceptional opportunity for unforgettable night dives.
With a visibility of approximately 9 meters and a maximum depth of 15 meters, this dive site is suitable for divers of all levels, including beginners. Prepare to be enchanted by the underwater wonders that await at this extraordinary location near Grotta di Byron in Italy's La Spezia region.
