Aichi D3A ’Val’ (Wreck)
This dive site features a fully intact Aichi D3A "Val" dive bomber wreck, resting upside down at a depth of 10-15m. Aside from being a captivating wreck to explore, the Val is teeming with fascinating critters like shrimp and lionfish. This location offers a diverse array of fish species including angelfish and trevally. Situated on the edge of a healthy reef, the wreck is surrounded by flourishing hard corals.
Recently discovered in June 2019, with assistance from our friends at Sealark, NZ, Mark Roche, Dave Moran, and our own staff member Jack, this extraordinary wreck is conveniently located just off Illangana Point, close to Munda in the Western Solomon Islands. The Val rests with its propeller at 10m and the rear of the fuselage at 15m. As the primary dive bomber of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War Two, this aircraft was involved in significant raids, including the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor. It's worth noting that the Val sank more allied warships than any other Axis aircraft.
With a visibility of 12 meters and a maximum depth of 19 meters, this dive site is suitable for both beginner and advanced divers. Located in the beautiful Solomon Islands, it offers an incredible underwater experience.
