Abu Kafan North

Abu Kafan North Dive Site: Uncover the Wonders of the Abyss

Abu Kafan North offers an exhilarating diving experience in the Red Sea, situated approximately 80 minutes away from Soma Bay, Egypt. Translating to "father of the abyss," this reef lives up to its name, being reminiscent of a smaller version of Elphinstone.

At the northern tip of Abu Kafan, divers can explore a safe haven for soft and fan corals, as well as encounter an abundance of impressive marine life. Prepare to be amazed by the presence of majestic reef sharks, graceful rays, swift barracudas, and elegant turtles.

Immerse yourself in the unparalleled beauty of the Red Sea's most captivating wall dives. Emerging from depths of over 600 meters, this site gradually rises to just below the water's surface. On the north and south sides, two long and narrow plateaus covered in vibrant colors of fantastic table corals await. Discover perches, moray eels, and enchanting clownfish residing in lively green anemones. Keep a keen eye out for thrilling encounters with tuna, barracudas, and occasional appearances by white tip reef sharks.

Abu Kafan stretches from north to south, with the south side offering more protection and optimal anchoring spots. Pointed in shape, this dive site is flanked by steep coral walls, plunging vertically to depths of 100 meters and beyond. Nestled between the coral blocks and the reef wall, a majestic table coral with a diameter of several meters stands tall. Explore the impressive overhang nearby, an essential highlight of your dive. Along the nearly vertical eastern side of the reef, be awed by the exquisite display of soft corals, gorgonians, and black coral. Please note that strong currents may occur during unfavorable weather, creating thrilling drift dive opportunities when conditions are favorable. The eastern wall, adorned with numerous small cracks and overhangs, provides ever-changing perspectives to discover.

Dive enthusiasts may explore the north side only during calm sea conditions. Here, a small plateau extends 22 to 28 meters into the open sea, dropping dramatically into the mesmerizing blue depths, similar to the south side. Drift diving is the preferred method on the north side. As you venture northeast, you'll encounter the majestic fan and brush corals of the eastern offshoot, providing a safe haven for the long-nosed hawkfish. The open water reveals patrolling unicorn surgeonfish and impressive schools of colorful fish. Prepare for thrilling encounters with barracudas, turtles, tunas, and reef sharks, and keep your eyes peeled for the occasional sighting of a hammerhead shark. The vibrant and diverse coral growth here adds an extra touch of wonder to this unforgettable diving experience.
