Windmill Beach
As you explore the underwater world, you'll encounter a sandy bottom adorned with impressive granite outcrops and boulders. Some of these formations boast remarkable relief, reaching near or even above the water's surface. The gently sloping beaches gradually give way to rocky terrain near the mouth of the north cove, where depths reach around 3 to 4 meters. Within this area, numerous small boulders create shelter for a diverse array of invertebrates and fish species. At the mouth of the cove, the seabed suddenly drops over a rocky ledge, revealing a vast sandy expanse that stretches all the way to Photographer's Reef and beyond. Towards the northeast and east of the north cove, you'll find several captivating pinnacles.
Meanwhile, the south cove offers a steeper initial slope before transitioning into mostly sandy terrain. Its borders are defined by rocks on both sides, providing an intriguing diving experience. To the east of Windmill Beach, offshore reefs await exploration. One such reef lies approximately 300 meters off the south cove, bearing 115° magnetic. Within this area of predominantly sandy seabed, you'll encounter a thriving population of purple sea pens towards the north at depths of about 10 to 12 meters. Keep your eyes peeled for the fascinating Pierre's Armina, also known as the Striped Sand Slug, as it feeds on these sea pens. Additionally, sightings of Gilchrist's Armina have been reported on the sandy seabed in this vicinity.
With an average visibility of 6 meters and a maximum depth of 8 meters, this dive site is ideally suited for beginners. Located in South Africa, specifically within Links Crescent, The Boulders, Cape Town Ward 61, Simon's Town, City of Cape Town, Western Cape, 7995, it offers a convenient and unforgettable diving experience.
