West Ridge, Koh Bon
Located approximately 50 km west of Khao Lak in the stunning Phang-nga Province of Thailand, Bon Island is a must-visit destination for divers of all levels. Situated about 20 km north of the renowned Similan Islands, this uplifted limestone island offers a remarkable underwater experience.
One of the main highlights of Bon Island is the presence of majestic manta rays, which frequent the area for feeding. Divers can also encounter an impressive array of big fish, including whale sharks, tiger sharks, and eagle rays. The waters around Bon Island are teeming with vibrant marine life, with large schools of fusiliers and migratory predatory fish such as bluefin trevally and bluefin tuna adding to the excitement.
On the west side of Bon Island, divers will find a long and narrow ridge point. The southern section of this ridge consists of a vertical wall that drops to a depth of 18-20 meters above the water's surface. Beyond the wall, a reef slope extends further for approximately 30 meters. In contrast, the northern side of the ridge offers a gentle slope, gradually reaching depths ranging from 10-12m to 25-27m. The tip of the ridge provides excellent visibility and is often dominated by schools of yellowfin tuna and big fish such as bluefin trevally.
Underneath the majestic wall, divers will encounter vast schools of Hawksbill anchovies, black snappers, and yellow snappers. At the reef side, a captivating display of marine life awaits, including playful clownfish, intriguing octopuses, and swift snapper fish. However, it is worth noting that the currents around the ridge can be complex, particularly during early tides, and divers should exercise caution.
With impressive visibility up to 19m and a maximum depth of 24m, Bon Island offers an excellent diving experience for both beginner and advanced divers. Whether you are exploring the stunning wall, admiring the diverse marine species, or immersing yourself in the captivating underwater world, Bon Island promises unforgettable dive adventures.
