Villers-deux-Eglises
In its heyday, the quarry supplied marble for abbey decorations in the Aisne, Oise, and Mons regions. From 1769 to 1784, it became a prominent source of marble for France, used in the creation of elegant tables and ornate fireplaces.
After the quarry was no longer in use, it was transformed into a diving center with a maximum depth of 25m. Today, divers can explore the depths of this water-filled quarry and marvel at its beauty. The water, sourced from the water table, maintains excellent quality, thanks to a compressor on the surface that releases air under pressure through perforated pipes.
Once underwater, divers are immediately greeted by the diverse ecosystem thriving within the quarry. The abundance of marine life includes various species of carp, sterlets, and sturgeons. Divers can spot fascinating creatures like the Siberian Sterlet, Beluga, Diamond, stellata, and Albinos.
With a visibility of 5m, the Villers-Deux-Eglises quarry offers an enchanting underwater landscape to explore. However, due to the depth and potential challenges encountered, this dive site is recommended for advanced and expert divers who have the necessary skills and experience.
Immerse yourself in the captivating history and panoramic views of the Villers-Deux-Eglises quarry. Plan your dive adventure in this hidden gem of Wallonia, Belgium, and discover the wonders that await beneath the surface.
