Pared Sur Isla del Fraile (La Boya)
The South Face, also known as La Boya, is a popular dive site located on the outermost part of Isla del Fraile in Spain. It offers a gradual slope starting at a depth of 7 meters and progressively increasing to 30 meters. However, most dives at this site typically range from 20 to 22 meters. With a maximum depth of 22 meters, this dive site is suitable for beginner divers and allows for extended dive times of around 45 to 50 minutes. The underwater terrain features a vertical wall, starting from an area of landslides that form a platform and then descending to a coastal detrital plain at 30 meters depth.
During the dive, divers will explore the wall and navigate through boulders, accompanied by a small meadow of Posidonia Oceanica to the west and a vast sandy plain to the south. The sandy plain offers a chance to spot remarkable individuals of cerianthus membranaceus. Currents at this dive site are generally manageable, making it accessible for divers of all levels. However, it is essential to note that this dive reaches greater depths compared to other sites in Isla del Fraile.
The South Face showcases diverse marine life in excellent preservation, similar to La Cresta and El Mogote dive sites. Algae species like padina pavonica, asparagopsis armata, and halopteris fillicina thrive in this area. Divers can also expect to encounter sponges, anemones, polychaetes, and sea urchins. The site is teeming with various fish species, including scorpion fish, moray eels, crawfish, salps, damselfish, and fredis or gypsies. Depending on the season, lucky divers may even spot groupers, dentons, barracudas, or rays.
With a visibility of approximately 12 meters, divers can enjoy clear underwater views and fully immerse themselves in the rich marine ecosystem of Isla del Fraile. Located along the coastal path of El Hornillo in the Alto Guadalentín region of Murcia, this dive site offers an unforgettable underwater adventure in Spain.
