Vilarinho das Furnas

Submerged in the serene waters of the Vilarinho das Furnas reservoir, nestled within the breathtaking Peneda Gerês National Park in Portugal, lies a remarkable underwater treasure - a submerged mountain village. This enchanting dive site offers a truly unique experience for divers of all levels.

Once a thriving community with a population of approximately 300 inhabitants, this village has been submerged since 1971, its origins shrouded in the mists of time. Some historians even trace its roots back to pre-Roman times, adding a sense of mystery to the site. The first written references to Vilarinho date back to 1540, showcasing its rich historical significance.

As you descend into the crystal-clear waters, an array of fascinating aquatic life awaits your exploration. The submerged village provides an ideal habitat for largemouth bass, perch, and water snakes, especially during the height of summer. Moreover, you may also encounter various species of batrachians, adding to the biodiversity of the site.

Despite the passage of time and the waters' embrace, remnants of this once-thriving village still remain. Amidst the ruins, you'll discover narrow alleys, buildings, and facades that captivate the imagination. The school, the arch bridge, and other structures hint at a possible Roman influence, further enhancing the sense of historical continuity.

Diving conditions at this site are generally favorable, making it accessible to beginners. With a maximum depth of 14 meters and visibility reaching approximately 5 meters, divers can navigate this underwater wonderland with relative ease. The absence of strong currents further contributes to the tranquil environment, allowing for a leisurely exploration of the village's submerged treasures.

When planning your dive, bear in mind that water temperatures vary throughout the year. In winter, temperatures can drop to 7ºC, while in the summer, a pleasant 21ºC invites divers to take a plunge. Additionally, the water levels fluctuate depending on the season. During summer, the reservoir reaches a depth of up to 30 meters in some areas of the village, whereas in autumn, the water gradually recedes, revealing the walls and facades of the village.

To fully enjoy your dive experience, it is recommended to acquire a navigation certification. The bottom of the reservoir is mainly composed of mud, and visibility can range from 5 meters to a more challenging environment with reduced visibility. In terms of thermal protection, divers should choose their wetsuits or drysuits accordingly, ranging from 5mm thickness to suit the fluctuating seasons throughout the year.

Whether you're an experienced diver or just beginning your underwater adventures, Vilarinho das Furnas offers a captivating dive site all year round. Immerse yourself in history, discover the hidden gems of this submerged village, and create unforgettable memories as you explore the depths of the reservoir.
