Relitto della Piattaforma Paguro

Located about 11 miles southeast of Marina di Ravenna in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, the wreck of the "PAGURO" is a captivating dive site in the upper Adriatic Sea. This methane platform, which sank in 1965, has been designated as a biological protection area since 1995. It is renowned for its incredible biodiversity and is considered one of the most stunning dive sites in the region.

To explore the Paguro wreck, divers can embark on a full-day boat trip or opt for a shorter excursion on a dinghy. The wreck is teeming with a diverse range of marine life, including mesmerizing benthic flora and fauna. Underwater enthusiasts can marvel at the sight of creatures such as lobsters, spider crabs, congers, and redfish. Additionally, pelagic species like corvina, sea bream, and sea bass can be spotted in the vicinity.

Originally constructed by the renowned "Rosetti" shipyard in Ravenna, the Paguro platform was intended to be a mobile drilling platform for AGIP. However, during a methane well drilling operation in September 1965, an unexpected gas leak occurred, leading to a catastrophic event. The pressure from the gas leak caused an uncontrollable eruption, resulting in the sinking of the platform.

Despite its tragic history, the wreck of the Paguro has become an alluring destination for wreck diving and marine biology enthusiasts. The diverse array of flora and fauna present at the site has made it a protected area. The Paguro Association is actively involved in preserving and enhancing the underwater habitat, and their efforts have led to the site being recognized as the first and only marine Site of Community Interest.

The dive depth at the Paguro wreck ranges from 9 to 33 meters, making it suitable for divers of various skill levels. Beginner, advanced, and expert divers can all appreciate the intricate structures and abundant marine life found within these depths. It is important to note that visibility at the site can vary, but on average, it is around 12 meters.

When visiting the Paguro dive site, it is highly recommended to dive with experienced guides and instructors who can help you navigate the site's unique features and ensure your safety. These knowledgeable professionals will guide you through the stunning underwater environment, allowing you to witness the remarkable biodiversity firsthand.

To reach the dive site, it is preferable to embark on a boat trip, which lasts for a full day and includes two dives, along with a delicious onboard lunch. The journey from Marina di Ravenna to the Paguro dive site takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Alternatively, divers can opt for a shorter transfer of about 40 minutes by rubber dinghy from the seaside resort of Marina di Ravenna.

In addition to the diving opportunities, there are other attractions in the area to explore. After your dive at the Paguro wreck, you can visit the "Museum of Underwater Activities" and indulge in the culinary delights of the Emilia-Romagna region. Delicacies such as piadina, Squacquerone DOP cheese, and locally sourced seafood specialties like "Saraghina allo scottadito" (grilled anchovies) and "cozzata" (mussels and clams) await you.

Plan your dive adventure at the Paguro wreck and be captivated by the beauty of this underwater marvel. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver, this exceptional dive site promises an unforgettable experience in the crystal-clear waters of Italy's Adriatic Sea.
