Bristol Beaufighter (Wreck)
Situated off the captivating Cape Kouroupas, to the west of Naxos, the wreck rests at a depth of 34 meters. Identified as the Beaufighter TF.X serial JM225 from No.47 Squadron RAF, it was involved in a daring mission attacking enemy ships in Naxos Harbor on October 30, 1943. The aircraft faced the impact of ground fire, compelling its courageous New Zealander crew members, F/O W.E. Hayter and W/O T.J. Harper, to bail out and safely reach the water. Rescued by locals, they were later clandestinely escorted off the island. Now, the aircraft rests on its belly, adorned by the wonders of the underwater world.
Delve into the cockpit, catch a glimpse of the gunner seat, and follow the majestic wing span where two magnificent scorpion fish can be found. Take note of the single remaining propeller, bearing the scars of its encounter with the vast sea. As you explore, exercise caution with your fins to prevent disturbing the fine sand and silt, which could impair visibility. With average dive times of around 30 minutes, ensure you monitor your dive time closely, as this captivating wreck may tempt you into decompression mode.
This exceptional dive site offers remarkable visibility of up to 20 meters, allowing you to fully appreciate the splendor that surrounds you. Recommended for advanced and expert divers, this memorable experience awaits off the coast of Naxos, in the mesmerizing South Aegean region of Greece.
