Wartime History of the Azumasan Maru in the Pacific
The Azumasan Maru served as a Japanese Navy transport vessel during the Pacific War. On April 28, 1942, it departed Truk as part of "Operation MO" - the invasion of Tulagi and Port Moresby. During its journey, it was carefully escorted by a fleet of other ships, including destroyers and minelayers. Despite being targeted by carrier aircraft from the USS Yorktown CV-5, the Azumasan Maru successfully evaded hits during the attack.
On October 15, 1942, the Azumasan Maru was beached near Bunani Point on the north coast of Guadalcanal. But tragedy struck as SBD Dauntless dive bombers swiftly attacked, causing severe damage and setting the ship ablaze. The vessel, along with the Sasako Maru and Kyusyu Maru, eventually sank into deep water off Ruaniu after B-17 Flying Fortress bombers targeted the damaged ship.
Exploring the Azumasan Wreck
In the 1970s, SCUBA divers made a groundbreaking discovery - the remarkable Azumasan wreck still intact, seated in excellent condition at a maximum depth of 38m. Known locally as the "Deep Ruanui" wreck, this underwater gem offers pristine visibility of 16m that draws in majestic pelagic species. Be ready to marvel at the soft corals adorning the bow gun, creating a picture-perfect underwater scene.
